Too many of our partners are running into situations where they are overwhelmed with things that need to be done. Need to clean up old accounts, or balance a checkbook that someone let get WAY out of control. How about that recent new hire that walked in to find all “standard” processes are not being done in a “standard” way? There is an old saying “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time”. Does it matter where you start to eat? I say no…as long as its bite sized! So LET’S GET STARTED!
Every office has a list, the list of things they want to work on. Maybe you are planning on working with your partner to do a process analysis, or maybe you are considering a full system “reboot” and starting over because things have gotten so out of hand. These are excellent goals, and wonderful projects but don’t wait to get started. There are always small adjustments you can make. Maybe you still want to work with your consulting partners to help assure the change will align with the new process or the new system, but if it’s a bite size change it may help in more ways than just fixing the one broken item.
Change! Change is a scary word, and it’s a concept that creates fear and doubt in teams. By taking that small action and getting started you are helping your team grow comfortable with change. This will pay huge dividends when you try to make the bigger fixes. More than that, the small changes, moving toward the same goal as the upcoming large changes, allow the team to prepare the processes for the future state. You want to rework the AP process? Start by looking at just the PO portion of AP. Do you create POs for all purchases? Do you have a process? Are all teams in the company following the same process, and so on? Small changes, that if implemented will help with the bigger goal of reworking the AP process. There are literally 100s and 1000s of small items you can start working on that are aligned with your goals. You just have to pick one and go.
